Where to stay on a road trip between LA and San Francisco?

Bed and Breakfasts
Daniel A asked:

Going to take a week this summer and drive from LA to San Francisco. Any advice on nice places/hotels/bed breakfasts to stay would be greatly appreciated. We're planning on picking 2-3 towns and staying about 1-2 days at each town.
Sorry, yeah it is along the coast. Thanks for all the replies!

I'd suggest stopping in Santa Barbara …

… then San Luis Obispo …

… and plan to spend several days on the Monterey Bay exploring Monterey, Carmel, Capitola, and Santa Cruz.

Santa Barbara or Monterey…but it doesn't really take very long to get from LA to SF …you could do it in one day and just stay longer in SF if you wanted to
